Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital Board Directs Administration to Pursue Fact Finding and Mediation to Settle Nurses Contract Dispute
August 26, 2016, Hollister, CA – The San Benito Health Care District Board listened to testimonials from nurses at Thursday night’s Board meeting. Board President, Gordon Machado, thanked them for speaking and acknowledged their requests for continued negotiations and to re-enter into mediation.
In an effort to move negotiations forward, The Board voted unanimously to approve the delay of implementation of the Hospitals Last, Best and Final Offer, based on nurses’ input. The Board then directed Hospital Administration to enter into a State of California Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) Fact Finding process and mediation. State law specifically authorizes these procedures and they have proven to be effective in settling many labor negotiation impasses. The Board urged the hospital nurses to encourage their bargaining representatives from the California Nurses Association (CNA) to meet with Administration in Fact Finding mediation.
“The Board sincerely hopes that this action provides momentum to move the negotiation process toward a quick and mutually acceptable resolution,” stated Mr. Machado. “It is now up to the nurses to direct their CNA representative to agree to what they’ve demanded at our meeting. We hope CNA agrees to this positive move from both the nurses and the Board.”
