HOLLISTER, CA - November 28, 2022: Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital (HHMH) issued an update Monday, assuring its employees and the community that administrative staff and experts engaged by the hospital are pursuing multiple angles to resolve the hospital’s fiscal emergency. The hospital remains open and continues to offer high-quality patient care without compromise.

The HHMH team has been communicating with the district’s creditors and seeking opportunities to obtain emergency funding. HHMH’s outreach efforts have included discussions with San Benito County supervisors, state assembly members’ and state senators’ offices, and the California State Treasurer’s office. In addition, the hospital has held advocacy meetings with the Association of California Healthcare Districts and California Hospital Association.

The update follows a November 4 special meeting of the Board of Directors of San Benito Health Care District, at which the board passed a resolution declaring a fiscal emergency. The resolution gave administrators the authority to file a petition under Chapter 9 of the Bankruptcy Code, if and when necessary. No bankruptcy filing has occurred to date.

“The hospital’s administrative staff and outside advisors are working hard to determine the best solutions for HHMH and its patient community by exploring all options,” said Interim CEO Mary Casillas.
