Construction Begins on Barragan Family Diabetes Center
Remodeling and construction at the 930 Sunnyslope Road Medical Suite has begun for the new Barragan Family Diabetes Center, made possible by a generous gift from Mary Ann Barragan in memory of her husband, Ray, who suffered from diabetes for many years.
The Foundation hosted a celebration and the unveiling of the “Future Home” banner with the logo and name of the new Center. Kristine Hudson, Foundation Board President, thanked Mrs. Barragan for her generosity, dedication and inspiration to this project, and also introduced Mrs. Barragan’s children who were also in attendance, Ann Marie and Andrew. JR was unable to attend.
District Board President Gordon Machado also thanked the Barragans and introduced the new Medical Director for the Center, Endocrinologist Dr. Michael Koteles; Keith Stevens, the Administrative Director for the Center; and Art Correa who is the contractor for the project.
Current data indicates that 12% of the adult population in San Benito County has diabetes. An estimated 47% of the adult population is considered pre-diabetic or at risk of becoming diabetic. That is over half of all adults living in San Benito County. This generous gift to establish The Barragan Family Diabetes Center will allow the Hospital to better serve community members suffering from the impacts of diabetes-related health issues. The center will include wound care, and will be the first and only of its kind in San Benito County.
